At West Springs we are here to provide complete professional dental care for your pet. Treat issues early before they become serious.
Your pet’s teeth are more than just a smile, they’re a key part of their overall well-being. Dental issues can lead to serious discomfort, infection, and long-term health concerns if not addressed. That’s why dental care is a core part of what we offer here at West Springs Veterinary Hospital.
Catches dental pain early: Most pets won’t show obvious signs until things get worse. Routine cleanings help us catch problems early and keep your pet comfortable.
Helps prevent serious infections: Untreated dental disease can let bacteria enter the bloodstream and affect organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys. Cleanings help protect against that.
Supports your pet’s daily comfort: Healthy teeth make it easier to eat, play, and enjoy life without inflammation or mouth pain.
Lowers the chance of costly emergencies: Staying ahead with preventive dental care means fewer unexpected visits and simpler, more affordable treatments.
Your pet can’t say when something’s wrong, but there are definitely signs you can look for. If you’ve noticed any of the following, it could be time to schedule a dental visit at West Springs Veterinary Hospital:
Ongoing bad breath: If your pet’s breath smells consistently unpleasant, it could point to dental infection or hidden decay.
Red, swollen gums or visible buildup: Tartar, inflammation, or bleeding are early signs of gum disease that shouldn’t be ignored.
Chewing differently or avoiding food: Dropping kibble, chewing only on one side, or skipping meals can be signs of oral discomfort or pain.
Face pawing or rubbing: Pets often paw at their mouth when something hurts—whether it’s a loose tooth, gum irritation, or something stuck.
Our dental exams and cleanings go beyond freshening your pet’s breath. Each visit is designed to uncover hidden issues, reduce future risks, and support your pet’s health with safe, thorough care. Here’s what we include in every dental procedure at our vet clinic:

Great staff always there to assist in my dogs healthPosted on Allison Garbe2025-08-25Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I take my dog to this vet and I received excellent service the previous visits. However, my last visit to just get his vaccines ended up costing me double what I was expecting. I felt like the vet was trying to upsell me with EVERYTHING even when I had already expressed my budget concerns. She wouldn’t tell me the price on things and it got really frustrating. She was trying to sell me a new vaccine that isn’t even common in Calgary and kept pushing. I suggest asking about people’s lifestyles first and if the client has already expresses concerns about budget - be mindful of that and explain the costs.

Yes. We provide full dental exams and cleanings for both dogs and cats, tailored to their specific breed, age, and health needs.
The best time to start dental care is as early as 6 months old. Even though professional cleanings usually begin around age 2–3, early exams help catch issues before they start. By age 3, most pets may already show signs of dental disease.
Small breeds and senior pets may need dental care even earlier or more frequently, depending on their risk factors.
Most pets benefit from annual dental cleanings. Some may need them more often based on breed, age, or previous dental issues. During your complimentary consultation we will walk you through your pets individual dental plan and make sure that your pet gets the right dental treatment they need.
Yes. Anesthesia is essential to safely clean beneath the gumline, take X-rays, and perform any extractions without causing stress or pain. We monitor your pet closely throughout the procedure.
We include full-mouth dental X-rays with every dental procedure. X-rays allow us to see what’s happening beneath the surface and catch issues that aren’t visible to the eye.
Our team will make sure that we do a deep dive into your pets oral health. We will look at your pet’s X-Rays and if they reveal any damage, we’ll discuss treatment options with you. Extractions are done only when absolutely necessary and are performed under safe, monitored anesthesia.
Yes, and in many cases, they should. Age alone doesn’t prevent your pet from receiving dental care. At West Springs Animal Clinic, we use pre-anesthetic bloodwork and modern monitoring tools to make sure your senior pet is safe and comfortable during their dental procedure. In fact, untreated dental disease can cause far more harm to an aging pet’s health than the procedure itself.
We always prioritize saving teeth when it’s possible. But in cases of severe infection, loose teeth, or exposed roots, extractions may be the kindest option to relieve pain and prevent further issues. If the tooth can be preserved, we’ll walk you through your options. Whether those options include advanced cleaning, medications, or a wait-and-watch approach. Our goal is to keep your pet healthy and pain-free with the least invasive path.
